Cowboys Win Exciting Game Against Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- Lightning flashed outside Acrisure Stadium, causing a delay for the Dallas Cowboys' game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. While they waited, quarterback Dak Prescott encouraged his teammates.
"I told them this game would be unforgettable," Prescott said. He kept busy by eating a protein waffle, stretching, and doing drills. "With all the delays, I kept saying, 'Let’s make this game one to remember.' And I think we did."
With just 20 seconds left, Prescott threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Tolbert, giving the Cowboys a 20-17 win. This victory kept the Cowboys (3-2) above .500 and close to the Washington Commanders (4-1) in the NFC East standings. It was also their best start on the road since Prescott's rookie year in 2016.
This game was special for coach Mike McCarthy, who finally won against his hometown Steelers after losing to them four times before. "It feels great," McCarthy said as he left the stadium with his family. "But this win is really about the players. They worked hard."
After the game, the players surprised McCarthy with the game ball, which he said was the first he ever received. Prescott praised him, saying, "I love him. He’s a great coach and very proud of where he’s from."
The Cowboys didn’t play perfectly. Prescott had three turnovers: two interceptions and a fumble. They also had a field goal blocked and were penalized 11 times for 87 yards.
With under five minutes left, Prescott had a chance to win the game. "His calmness is one of his biggest strengths," McCarthy noted. Prescott completed 5 of 7 passes for 46 yards during the winning drive and even recovered his own fumble at the 4-yard line.
After the Steelers called a timeout with 26 seconds left, McCarthy changed the play to give Prescott more help. Tolbert, starting for the injured Brandin Cooks, caught the touchdown pass with 20 seconds to go.
"I love being in those moments," Prescott said. "You can be upset about mistakes, but when I have the ball and a chance to win, that’s all I need."
The Cowboys faced tough challenges, missing key players like Cooks, Micah Parsons, and DeMarcus Lawrence. They also lost two top draft picks to knee injuries in the first half. Despite these problems, the team showed great determination.
"I think the team's spirit really showed tonight," McCarthy said.
