Buffalo Bills Bolster Offense with Amari Cooper Trade

The Buffalo Bills have made a significant move by acquiring Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns in a trade that bolsters their receiving corps. This comes after the Bills traded away star receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans earlier in the season. Popup Iframe Example

In exchange for Cooper and a sixth-round draft pick in 2025, the Bills sent a third-round pick in 2025 and a seventh-round pick in 2026 to the Browns.

At 30 years old, Cooper is expected to fill the No. 1 receiver role that the Bills have been missing. His addition comes at a critical time for the team, as quarterback Josh Allen has struggled with completing passes to wide receivers this season. Currently, Allen averages just 8.5 completions per game when targeting wideouts, placing him among the lowest in the league.

Despite a strong 2023 season where he racked up a career-high 1,250 receiving yards, Cooper has faced challenges this year, with the Browns’ offense scoring fewer than 20 points in each of their six games. He leads the Browns with 250 receiving yards and two touchdowns, but his yards per target are among the worst in the NFL, indicating difficulties in the passing game.

The trade comes just hours after the New York Jets made headlines by acquiring Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders, intensifying competition in the AFC East. The Browns had received multiple offers for Cooper, whose contract was made more manageable for potential trade partners when the Browns converted much of his $20 million base salary into a signing bonus.

Cooper's presence is expected to make an immediate impact on the Bills, who have struggled to get their receivers open downfield in recent games. With the Bills ranking 25th or worse in targets, receptions, and receiving yards, adding a proven talent like Cooper provides a much-needed boost.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott expressed confidence in the current receiving corps but acknowledged the excitement of adding Cooper. “We believe in the receivers that we already have in the room," he said. "It's about the team, and we're anxious to get him on board and rolling.”

To make room for Cooper, the Bills released wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, clearing a roster spot for their new addition. Cooper is a five-time Pro Bowl selection with impressive career statistics: 691 receptions for 9,736 yards and 62 touchdowns over 11 seasons. This marks the third time he has been traded in his career, previously moving from the Raiders to the Cowboys in 2018 and from the Cowboys to the Browns in 2022.

The Bills, currently sitting at 4-2, are looking to make a strong push for the playoffs, and the acquisition of Amari Cooper could be a pivotal step in that direction. With the team aiming to find success through a more balanced offense, Cooper’s talent and experience are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing their passing game and ultimately improving their chances for the season ahead.
